The Birthstones for the Months of the Year?

that Garnet is the gemstone for the month of January.  When we think of garnets we think of a red stone.  However garnets can be found in many colors.  The rarest color of garnet is blue.  Garnets can also be transparent or opague.

that Amethyst is the birthstone for the month of February.  Amethyst is a semiprecious stone and a form of quartz.  Amethyst is purple or violet.

Aquamarine is the gemstone for the month of March.  Aquamarine is a very clear and translucent gem.  The color of aquamarine is between green and blue.  The word aquamarine is from Latin and it means “water of the sea.”

Diamond is the birthstone for the month of April.  Diamonds have been valued as gemstones since ancient India.  Diamonds become more popular with improved cutting and polishing techniques.  Diamonds are selected considering their carats (weight), cut, color and clarity.

Emerald is the birthstone for the month of May.  Emeralds are green.  The finest emeralds also have a high degree of transparency.

Ruby is the birthstone for the month of July.  The ruby is a precious stone.  The price of ruby is determined by its color.  Bright red rubies are the most valuable.  Bright rubies are called “blood red rubies.”

The Peridot is the gemstone for the month of August.  Peridot is always green.  It is one of the few gemstones that only form in one color.  The green can vary from olive green to a more yellow  or brownish green.  The dark olive green peridot is the most prized gem.

The Sapphire is the gemstone for the month of September.  The sapphire is a beautiful blue stone.  Sapphires are found in other colors, but blue sapphire is considered the finest.

Opal is the gemstone for the month of October.  A quality opal has a lot of color in it.  The colors in an opal can range from white and pink to magenta, blue and black.  Opals can be semitransparent or opaque, depending on their density.

The Topaz and the citrine are the gemstones for the month of November.  For many years the topaz was confused with the citrine gemstone.  Finally it was decided to makie the topaz the main birthstone for November and citrine the backup birthstone for November.  Topaz was found in many colors.  Orange topaz is the birthstone.  Citrine is a deep shade of golden yellow.

Tanzanite and the Zircon are the gemstones for the month of December.  Turquoise is also used as a birthstone for December.  The blue varieties of tanzanite and zircon were chosen for December because their shade of blue is similar to the cold December months.  Zircon is found in a variety of colors, but only the blue is the most popular color.
